Welcome to the Blog of Dr. Mark E. Sowell, DPM.

Please participate while you are here. Comment, ask questions and let me know how I am doing. My hope is that this blog will help relieve foot pain and avoid foot complications by providing some basic footcare information to its readers. I practice podiatry in Nacogdoches and Carthage Texas as well as over fifteen area nursing homes and assisted living facilities in East Texas.

Excellent care and customer service will grow our practice through patient referrals.

We want to provide a medical experience that surpasses expectations. Kind, courteous, on-time, accurate, educational, concerned, connected and successful are just a few ways we want our patients to see us.  We want our patients to trust Sowell Podiatry and be so comfortable with their care that they are willing to share us to their friends and families.  We promise to take the trust you show us seriously and to strive to improve each time you see us.  Your referrals are the highest compliment you can pay us…thank you.

We strive to reduce diabetic foot complications for our patients, and our community, though education, compassion and service.

Sowell Podiatry will take every opportunity to speak to or educate diabetics concerning their foot and medical care.  Too many people with diabetes suffer from wounds, infections and amputations that could be prevented with early diagnosis and treatment.  Diabetic foot complications put a large burden on our medical system and on the families affected by the disease.  If you know a person who has diabetes, please help them get involved in their own medical care and educate themselves on proper nutrition, blood sugar control, foot exams, eye exams, etc.  Sowell Podiatry provides education in the office, on our website (www.sowellpodiatry.com), on our blog (www.nacogdochesfootdoctor.com), through speaking engagements and community events.

We provide the highest level of podiatric care available through our constant education.

Dr. Sowell loves his patients.  He spends time getting to know each one and feels he is very fortunate to be in a profession that can provide so much pain relief!  He calls them at home, checks on their care, visits at hospitals and seeks advice on cases that need more advanced specialties.

Dr. Sowell loves podiatry.  He constantly reads medical literature, attends medical conferences and discusses interesting cases with fellow podiatrists.  He particularly enjoys diabetic foot care, wound care, foot surgery, sports medicine and vascular assessment.  In clinic, he trains his staff on common foot conditions and helps them prepare for various patients by discussing the disease and variations in its treatment.  Our staff also performs various tasks around the office so they are cross-trained and have a better understanding of the wide variety of care we provide at Sowell Podiatry.  We have two podiatry offices, provide care in over fifteen area nursing homes and perform surgery in three area hospitals and two surgery centers!

Excellent customer service is our goal.

Medical practices are busy places! With reduced reimbursements, increased paperwork and added layers of bureaucracy it can be very difficult to maintain a professional and courteous environment.  We strive to do this though building friendly relationships with our patients.  You can expect a warm welcome and willingness to make sure you are comfortable in our office.  If there is something you need to make your experience more pleasant, please do not hesitate to ask.  Also, Sowell Podiatry is constantly working to reduce waiting times in our office.  Communication is the key to this situation, so we will try to keep you posted when delays occur and we will work hard to catch up while maintaining our high level of care. If you must re-schedule we will remain flexible in finding a time that works for both of us.

Diagnosis and treatment are not enough. Patients need to be educated on their condition, treatment options and prevention.

Too often patients settle for a quick diagnosis from their physician and are handed a prescription on the way out without any explanation as to the severity of their problem, its cause, or how to prevent this from recurring.  At Sowell Podiatry, Dr. Sowell spends much of his time explaining the cause of the condition so patients have a better understanding and, therefore, can make a better decision concerning treatment.  Typically, many treatment options are considered and discussed.  Dr. Sowell feels a patient educated on their condition makes better decisions and is more compliant to the course of treatment. Written handouts and articles are distributed to promote more study at home if desired and our website (www.sowellpodiatry.com) is a greatresource for information.

I know it has been a while since my blog.  I guess, life has a way of distracting us all at times and I’m really excited to back at my keyboard pecking away!  Yesterday, the staff of Sowell Podiatry sat down for an extended meeting to discuss where we are…and where we want to be.  Constant evaluation and improvement is one of our core values and it was fun to meet and discuss exactly what our core values are.  I will be blogging about them for a while and would love to get any input you might have for us.

We also kicked around many ideas for the practice to reduce waiting times, to be more informative for our patients and new ways to help our diabetic patients avoid severe foot complications.  So hang on, because I believe that Sowell Podiatry is only getting better.  Let us know what you think over the weeks to come!
